UK renters are losing out on annual savings of more than £990 million when it comes to their energy bills, a study has determined.

This loss is because properties do not feature basic energy saving measures such as insulation, with only two in ten renters making any effort to boost the sustainability of their home, according to figures from E.ON.

David Bird, customer operations director at E.ON, said: "We'd urge both renters and landlords to think seriously about making some improvements to their properties. In some cases, renters can be eligible for free cavity wall and loft insulation."

Mr Bird advised homeowners to speak to their energy provider ahead of adopting energy efficiency measures, as there could be a number of offers available.

His remarks come after the National Insulation Association urged property owners to reduce their impact on the environment.

Neil Marshal, chief executive of the group, advised that insulation can help to accomplish this.
