Trafford Council has announced that it is unable to support Peel Energy's proposals for a power plant in Urnston.

Officials at the authority have cited concerns over arsenic, ammonia and nitrogen dioxide emissions as their reasons for objecting to the site and its flue accessories, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Peel Group project manager Jon England told the newspaper: "We are satisfied with many of the report’s findings. However, there is still some work to be done as the air quality department has indicated it has outstanding concerns about nitrogen dioxide levels."

The company could still receive planning permission, but it will now consult the local council regarding its concerns.

It comes after contracts were agreed for Kier to provide the £54 million Isle of Sheppey Academy on behalf of Kent County Council.

The site will aim to reduce emissions by 60 per cent and will be built in compliance with a renewable energy strategy
