Many homes across Britain are at risk of being damaged as a result of the country's austerity measures, research has indicated.

The last year has seen more than 18.5 million residents delay their home repairs to save money, with some even attempting to fix issues themselves as a means of cutting costs, according to a study by AA's Home Emergency Response Service.

Tom Stringer, head of AA Home Emergency Response, said: "Many homeowners seem to be mirroring the government's drive for austerity but this can be a false economy as problems tend to get worse in the home if you leave them unresolved."

Mr Stringer advised residents to look at their home insurance policy to ensure they are covered in the event of an emergency.

It is particularly important that homeowners seek the help of professionals when it comes to gas issues in the home.

When searching for gas maintenance specialists, people should ensure that the repair men are registered with the Gas Safe Register.
