Vattenfall is now taking part in a unique project that enables wind energy to be stored and converted into hydrogen gas through flue accessories.

This hydrogen can then be used to generate electricity and heat in power plants, or be used as fuel for cars.

As part of the project, Enertag, Total and Siemens will work with Vattenfall, with the initiative gaining support from numerous German states, as well as the German Ministry of Transport.

Oliver Weinmann, head of Vattenfall innovation in Germany, said: "There is currently no system designed to compensate for the differences between supply and demand within the sector of renewable energy. But this project allows us to find a balance in the system and it’s also good business."

Mr Weinmann went on to describe the work as a unique project for Germany and Europe as a whole, merging renewable electricity with heat and hydrogen to great effect.
