Flue pipe installation

Here are the main points to be aware of when installing flue pipe.

Please be sure to consult the building regulations and Hetas advice.

We strongly recommend getting a Hetas registered installer to do this.

Ensure all surfaces and joints are clean and free of dirt or grease.  Pipework runs should be as straight and vertical as possible , in order to prevent the build up of exhaust products and to ensure the chimney draw is optimal. Keep any horizontal runs to an absolute minimum.

Vitreous enamel should be used to only connect between appliances and chimney flues. They should not pass through external/internal walls, partitions, roof spaces or floors. The spigot end (that's the end with the smaller taper ) should be pointing downwards. Exhaust gases can cause condensates to build up in the pipework, and these run downwards, so fitting the spigot end facing down prevents creating a situation where moisture can build up.

Each joint between sections , liner or appliance, should be adequately sealed to prevent gases escaping. This can be done with the use of fire cement and fire rope. Once done, ensure you do a smoke test to check all joints are secure.

Pipe must terminate at least 450 mm below combustible ceilings and be a minimum of three times it's diameter away from any combustible material. For example, if using 125mm pipe, there must not be any combustible material within a distance of 375mm from the centre line.
