Homeowners can save up to £100 every year by being more aware of the products around their home which utilise a large amount of energy, a specialist has noted.

Kettles are one of the devices which use a substantial amount of electricity, as they would cost 20p an hour if they were boiled continuously, a representative from Sustain Worldwide has highlighted.

Gordon Miller, co-founder of the group, advised people to ensure that they only fill kettles with the necessary amount of water, rather than wasting energy.

Mr Miller also gave other recommendations, advising people: "Switch TVs et cetera off at the wall and don't leave them on standby. When light bulbs blow – or the spotlights many homes have - replace them with low energy LEDs."

This month, communities minister Andrew Stunnell confirmed that a new energy performance certificate will provide homebuyers with clearer information regarding the efficiency of their property.
