Gas network owners have warned that energy costs could increase beyond 2020.

Northern Gas Networks has told Ofgem that prices will rise by 27 per cent, while National Grid and Sotia Gas Networks have both planned for expenses to jump by 11 per cent, reports the Guardian.

The increases have been made to facilitate the replacement of steel pipes with plastic tubing, while covering the cost of disruptive street works.

The GMB trade union has commented on the news, telling the Guardian: "We are in a perfect storm for consumers. In an industry that is less safe, with lower standards of service, it is the economics of the madhouse."

Residents who are concerned about their energy costs can contact the Energy Saving Trust's new helpline, which aims to help people to adopt efficient measures.

It will also offer assistance with the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target, among other UK government schemes.
