Homeowners with flue accessories could be losing money by not using standby saver products.
It has been found that roughly six out of ten households (61 per cent) in Britain are not using the appliances, which could help to significantly reduce monthly bills, according to research by Carrillion Energy Services.
The group determined that roughly £1 billion is wasted in the UK each year due to products that are left on standby.
Machines such as microwaves and dish washers still consume power even when they are not in use, but the amount of wastage can be decreased by turning these kinds of appliances off at the socket.
In addition to this, reducing energy wastage will help to cut a household's carbon footprint.
Sustainable Homes has claimed that consumer demand will be key in increasing the use of sustainable materials in properties.
The organisation believes that people's attitudes will only change when they look to live in houses that are less expensive to run.
