Plans for an incinerator and flue accessories in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Berkshire have been forwarded to the council.

Waste management firm Grundon wants to develop the facility on the Old Kiln Quarry site, located beside the M4 motorway at Chieveley. As a result of local opposition, the plant's capacity has been decreased from 350,000 to 250,000 tonnes.

West Berkshire Against Grundon Incinerator Group has released a statement on the matter, saying: "There are no waste incinerators on any AONBs currently in the UK and that is for a good reason.

"We are prepared to fight Grundon all the way to judicial review if necessary."

Elsewhere, a farmer from West Yorkshire has converted waste food into electricity, courtesy of a new anaerobic digestion plant.

Neil Gemmel has built a 400kW-capacity plant on his farm near Emley, where enough power is generated to power up to 650 homes.
