British Gas has confirmed that it will partner with Thames Water to promote energy-saving and water-saving products.

The two firms will unite over five years to help customers save money on flue accessories such as energy-efficient boilers, with the initiative's first step enabling Thames Water customers free loft and cavity wall insulation.

Nina Bhatia, managing director of Electrical and Dyno Services at British Gas, said: "Loft insulation and cavity wall insulation can save hundreds of pounds each year off household energy bills. And we are installing it in homes for free."

As part of the partnership, British Gas is also offering to fit water-saving devices into homes, allowing people to save more money and use a smaller amount of water.

This news comes after the University of Ulster started an investigation into the energy efficiency of heating appliances.

In an effort to find new methods of combatting fuel poverty, two purpose built terraced houses have been constructed at the university, where a series of assessments will be completed.
