Chesterfield Borough Council has confirmed that it will spend up to £15 million to improve council homes in the county during the next financial year.
This marks a 20 per cent increase on its spending in the existing financial year, with the rise resulting from the authority adopting the government's new self-financing scheme.
It will mean that the council will keep all the rental income from its tenants, which can then be invested back into the homes.
Councillor Jim McManus, executive member for housing at the council, said: "We will be able to make improvements to council homes much more quickly than under the previous system for the benefit of our tenants."
Mr McManus explained that the authority's aim of elevating all of its homes to the "decent homes" standard is now possible.
It comes after Bolton Council announced a new scheme to offer boiler grants and survival kits to homeowners in the town.
