It may be challenging for homeowners to notice potential defects within their flue accessories, a specialist says.
Flue issues can develop due to structural faults, excessive heat or a range of other influences and they can appear in open view, or alternatively they can affect internal areas of the chimney, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Mike McClintock told the newspaper: "They could appear in full view where the water heater vent is connected. But more often they occur inside the chimney where it's difficult even for a professional chimney sweep to spot them."
Mr McClintock has advised homeowners that chimney repairs can also take an extensive period of time, due to the elaborate nature of fixing issues such as cracked flue tiles.
Another factor that can lead to chimney damage is water, as the liquid can enter chimneys via cracks and then cause substantial fireplace damage.
