Welsh homes now must be installed with sprinkler systems in order to combat the potential threats posed by defective flue accessories.

The measure was initially suggested by the Domestic Fire Safety organisation in Wales, which later enforced the legislation after it was victorious in a ballot of its members.

Ann Jones, Vale of Clwyd assembly member, said: "This is a law that will save lives. Fire safety in homes has improved over the years but we cannot ignore the fact that 80 per cent of deaths and injuries from fire in Wales still occur in the home."

Ms Jones also noted that sprinkler systems in homes will make a difference to fire safety in the country.

The news was also welcomed by Peter Holland from the Chief Fire Officers Association, who told InsideHousing.co.uk that it was a monumental achievement for the safety of Welsh people.

He suggested that England should also "catch-up" with the policies of its neighbours.
