Gloucestershire-based compositing plant operator New Earth Solutions is being investigated by the Environmental Agency after locals complained about the plant's scent, with the design of its chimney and chimney cowl being seen as its potential source.

According to the BBC, residents in the Sharpness area of Gloucestershire have said that the smell connected with the plant is "making their lives a misery" and the possibility of altering the plant's chimney design is being considered.

In recent days, meetings have taken place between the factory owners, the local council and the Environmental Agency with a view to eradicating the odour of the plant, which has been open since 2008.

Also, American news source the Pacific Inlander has warned residents about the smell of chimneys and creosote in particular.

A journalist from the newspaper, Mike Bowden, informed readers that creosote "smells terrible" and advised that chimneys be maintained constantly.
