Homeowners should ensure that their chimneys are water sealed before attempting to use appliances such as flue liners for woodburners, a professional has advised.

As well as this, residents should try to keep their fireplaces as clean as possible in order to avoid harmful accumulations within their flues, according to chimney expert Mellissa Wintjen, who was speaking to 27East.com.

Ms Wintjen told the site: "It's best to clean chimneys and fireplaces during the spring or early summer when there isn't too much residual moisture. What is most important is to make sure chimneys are water sealed.

"In order to water seal a chimney, we apply an oil-based sealant throughout."

There are several other measures that homeowners can apply to their chimneys in order to ensure that they receive the best possible heating service.

For example, property owners should book a chimney inspection at least once a year to check that harmful substances such as creosote have not built-up inside their flues.
