Many homeowners will not be aware that their flue accessories can lead to two different kinds of chimney fires.

However, chimneys and homes can be damaged by two types of fire, which are rapid burning and slow burning chimney fires, according to an expert from AskTheChimneySweep.com.

The specialist warned property owners that they must be constantly on the look out for creosote, as it is a dangerous substance that is responsible for a large proportion of chimney fires each year.

This news comes after Fox28.com reported that a house fire in Indiana, US, was due to faulty chimney components.

Fire crews found heavy smoke at the property in Princetown Boulevard, Elkhart, after being alerted to the blaze on Tuesday afternoon (December 21st).

Robert Smith, Elkhart's chief fire inspector, told the website: "There's a lot of people using their fireplaces now. What I would like to suggest is that at least once a year [people should] have their chimney inspected."
