The Devon and Somerset Fire Service (DSFS) has offered guidance on how residents can use appliances such as flue liners for wood burners safely.

Officials from the group have advised that chimneys must be dirt-free in order to enable the free passage of hazardous combustion gases and eliminate dangerous substances such as creosote or soot.

Residents should also always use a fire guard to protect themselves against flying sparks and ensure that embers have been entirely put out before leaving the home. In addition, bird nests and other blockages must be removed from chimneys.

This news comes after EADT.co.uk reported that numerous chimney fires occurred in the Suffolk area during the past weekend.

On Sunday, fire crews were called to a blaze in Witnesham, which was triggered by a defective woodburning stove and was put out using a roof ladder as well as a hose reel.

A Chediston fire was also extinguished on Sunday in slightly longer than an hour.
