News that heating and energy bills could fall after the government reached an agreement with the 'big six' energy providers has been welcomed.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said that this is the step change that everyone has been waiting for.

She noted that consumer switching levels have "dropped off a cliff", however this could change by suppliers actively demonstrating what savings they could make.

The average household energy bill currently stands at £1,252 per year, which puts many families under financial pressure, with petrol and food prices also on the rise.

"Consumers should not just be told the best deal for their current payment method but also the best deal overall. This would encourage far more to take the step of moving to direct debit or going online in order to benefit from discounts on their bills," said Ms Robinson.

She added that the big six should not just direct consumers to their best tariff, but also how they can get an independent and impartial comparison.
