Investing in a new wood burning fire could be a pointless move in a property that does not have good enough insulation.
Homeowners who are looking to keep their abode warm through the winter months will hope that the heat they create from their fire stays inside the home.
However, if insulation is not up to scratch then much of this warmth will simply escape out of the house, leaving many with big energy bills as they will have to have their heating on for longer each day.
Charles Dawson, founder of Be Energy Smart, said that anyone who does not have loft insulation is "completely mad" as this option offers the quickest payback.
"[Also], low-energy lighting. So much money is wasted on the old filament lights, whereas for just a small amount of money you can get a really quick payback. Over and above that, things like draught prevention [can help]," he added.
