A new energy efficiency directive from the European Commission is hoping to promote greater efficiency in energy generation.
It will attempt to accomplish this by making combined heat and power (CHP) with district heating the default option for thermal generation, which could influence how flue accessories are used in the future.
The European Commission has proposed that all new and refurbished thermal electricity generation plants should be installed with high efficiency heat recovery equipment, while CHP should also be allowed priority grid access.
Commenting on the proposals, the Combined Heat and Power Association director Graham Meeks said: "Energy-efficient solutions are among the most cost-effective ways of reducing emissions, and this directive seeks to drive a step-change in energy efficiency across the European Union."
Mr Meeks also explained that it is vital that everything possible is accomplished to ensure that consumer costs are minimised as the UK economy is decarbonised.
