Property buyers could soon place a value premium on homes with flue accessories that perform effectively on their energy performance certificates (EPC), a specialist believes.

Current economic problems and rising energy costs mean that general sustainability and the energy efficiency of properties will cause the order of "must haves on a homebuyer's checklist" to rise, according to Sustain Worldwide.

Gordon Miller, co-founder and sustainability and communications director of the group, said: "Already, we are beginning to see purchasers take a property's energy efficiency into account when buying a home, and I believe we will soon begin to see a value premium on those houses which score highly on the EPC."

Mr Miller went on to say that rising energy costs and the economic downturn are affecting homeowners at the moment.

In response to the government's changes to the feed-in tariff, Miles Thomas from Savills said that the Department of Energy and Climate Change must commit to policies and incentive rates.
