An illegal gas fitter has been prosecuted after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found him to be endangering lives at a Surrey property, where he completed unsatisfactory work.

Michael Gill installed a new gas boiler and flue at a property in Kingsmead Park, Elstead, but left both of the systems in a hazardous condition.

Guildford Magistrates Court also heard that Mr Gill falsely claimed to be an accredited gas engineer, despite not being authenticated to work on flue accessories.

After the hearing, HSE inspector Andrew Cousins said: "In order to work legally in the UK, gas installers must be registered with the appropriate approved body - as Michael Gill is fully aware. Yet he defied this requirement and endangered lives with an installation that was shoddy at best."

Mr Gill also warned that residents should ask for ID and ensure that their engineer is officially registered.

In recent weeks, Wayne Marshall from Seven Sisters was charged at Neath Port Talbot Magistrates' Court following an investigation by the HSE, which found that he put a family at risk with improper chimney repairs.
