Holistic thinking is necessary in order to ensure that new build sites are sustainable, an expert has stated.

In order to guarantee an energy-efficient property, businesses should focus on "the whole picture", according to Sustain Worldwide spokesman Gordon Miller, who believes that heating bills can be "zero" if a site is designed with air-tight envelop and mechanical ventilation heat recovery space.

"If a source of renewable electricity generation - for example solar pv (photovoltaic), micro combined heat and power (CHP) - is installed, it's possible to be a net producer of electricity," he added.

Mr Miller advised firms to focus on materials such as insulation, which can have a substantial environmental impact, while helping to save money on monthly bills.

The advantages of insulation have also been advocated by Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor of Build It + Home Improvement magazine, who believes that the measure is key to guaranteeing a green property.
