The government should re-launch the boiler scrappage scheme that operated throughout 2010, one group has urged.

The money spent on re-starting the project would be minor when compared to the amount that the Treasury writes off in taxes on an annual basis, according to a representative from the Builders' Merchants Federation (BMF).

Brett Amphlett from the group explained: "The BMF can testify its simplicity was the prime reason it was so successful. It is a tried and tested way to improve the energy performance of homes - one that the public responded to."

Mr Amphlett continued by saying that another Boiler Scrappage Scheme at the cost of £50 million would be a justifiable use of public funds.

In Scotland, a Boiler Scrappage Scheme is already in operation, and Alex Neil, cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital investment recently announced that an extra £500,000 is being pumped into the heating initiative.
