The government's green home improvement proposals need to be handled carefully, one expert has underlined.

If the launch and roll-out of the plans is handled poorly, a public backlash may be witnessed against the companies involved in the scheme, a specialist from Sustain Worldwide has argued.

Gordon Miller, co-founder and sustainability and communications director of Sustain Worldwide, said: "When a government is seen to be interfering in an 'Englishman's castle', dictating what measures must be undertaken, it is treading on very shaky ground indeed."

Mr Miller explained that the proposals will prove to be positive if they create new jobs in the sector and encourage economic growth.

Earlier this month, the Daily Mail reported that the Department for Communities and Local Government has introduced new rules for people who wish to build a conservatory, replace a broken boiler or install new windows.

These individuals will not be able to complete these renovations unless they pay for measures such as insulation.
