Ministers are exploring plans to force residents to ensure their homes are more energy efficient when they undertake home improvements to flue accessories.

Proposals from Liberal Democrats communities minister Andrew Stunnell will ensure that anyone who makes changes to their properties that require building regulations will have to install measures to increase sustainability, reports the Financial Times.

Speaking to the news provider, a representative from the communities department said: "When a householder decides to change their boiler they would simply also be asked to make other energy efficiency improvements to help reduce the cost of rising energy bills."

The spokesperson went on to say that typical savings could reach as much as £150 a year.

The significance of energy efficiency was recently underlined by Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor of Build it + Home Improvement magazine, who claimed that the standard of insulation in homes has an effect on the number of technologies available to residents.
