A Hampshire Euro MP is exploring whether a proposed biomass power station for Southampton adheres with strict European Union (EU) air pollution planning regulations.

Green MEP Keith Taylor is against Helius Energy's plans to bring a 100-mega watt wood-fired plant to the city and wants to discover if the biomass fuel released from its flue accessories can be regarded as green, reports This Is Hampshire.

Mr Taylor told the news provider: "This area is already exceeding EU safety limits on air quality. Transporting biofuels to the site and burning it will make this problem worse."

He has consulted campaigners from the No to Southampton Biomass organisation, which has launched a protest against Helius Energy's proposed plant due to the noise and pollution that may be released from its 330ft chimney.

Chimney emissions have also concerned Scottish homeowners in Buchan, the Press and Journal Reports.

The residents are worried over Sita UK's new 140ft chimney, as they fear that it will emit potentially toxic gases.
