Chimney leaks can cause havoc with chimney cowls and thin wall insulated flues, but Ask the Chimney Sweep has helpful advice that may nullify any problems.

Firstly, it has to be recognised that water can enter from numerous different points, including the connection between the roof and the chimney, cracks in the chimney or crown, and via the roof.

Noticing a leak can be problematic and the blog has recommended completing a "water test", requiring residents to soak their chimney from its bottom to its peak at 15 minute intervals.

These times should then be recorded, leaving homeowners to see "how high above the ground the water is entering".

Also, this week is Chimney Fire Safety Week and therefore a perfect time for chimneys to be checked and potentially repaired.

Last week, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service (DSFRS) advised individuals to use the event as an opportunity to ensure that their chimneys and flue liners are in a safe state.
