Mears has formed a partnership with British Gas to work in the social housing sector, in a move intended to improve energy efficiency through the installation of heat pumps, solar panels and other low carbon technology in homes.

This could also include the installation of flue accessories that help with energy efficiency, such as a twin wall insulated flue for biomass boilers.

The partnership will aim to provide funding opportunities under the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target and the Community Energy Savings Programme for its social housing clients.

In addition, the joint venture will offer microgeneration installation and maintenance services, including whole house solutions such as air and ground source heat pumps, biomass boilers and solar panels.

As well as this, the companies will co-operate on repair and maintenance contracts across social housing developments and British Gas will focus on providing energy-efficiency services.

Mears chairman Bob Holt said: "Our close working relationship with British Gas will strengthen our existing relationships with our key customers."

He added that the companies will work to find "cost-effective methods of ensuring environmental compliance".

Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas, also spoke in response to the partnership and said that it represented a "whole house approach to energy management".
