Residents should conduct regular checks on their property to guarantee that its flue accessories are in good condition, it has been advised.

This is because inadequately maintained homes can contain several hazards, potentially causing dangers to homeowners. Therefore, people should make small improvements to their homes on a frequent basis, according to a representative from Build It.

Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor at Build It, said: "Home maintenance is an ongoing project - small jobs can be done and monitored throughout the year.

"A big check and home MOT should be carried out every autumn in preparation for the colder months, and spring so you can enjoy your home in the summer."

Ms DeSouza advised that areas of damp and mould could trigger allergic reactions among residents.

Her guidance follows a study by SearchFlow, which found that 21 per cent of British properties contain a major hazard that could need immediate repair.
