Energy secretary Chris Huhne has opened the UK's first carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant, where a number of flue accessories will be used.
The project is valued at more than £20 million and is a partnership between Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), Doosan Power Systems and Vattenfall, while support will be offered by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Northern Way and the Technology Strategy Board.
Technology at the plant will capture the equivalent of up to 100 tonnes of carbon emissions daily from SSE's Ferrybridge coal-fired power station.
Chris Huhne, secretary of state for energy and climate change, said: "This flagship test programme at Ferrybridge represents an important milestone in the UK’s plans to develop CCS and provides a critical bridge to meeting our long term aim of cost competitive CCS deployment by the 2020s."
Mr Huhne emphasised that the investment into the plant will be invaluable to the wider commercial-scale deployment of CCS.
