Crown Oil has removed 6.4 million litres of excess gas oil from the flue accessories of Derwent Power Station in Derby.
The project was launched in June and was completed in June, culminating in 200 tanker movements. Crown Oil was awarded the contract for the work due to its ability to complete the work without inflicting environmental damage, according to Plant Engineer.
Crown Oil general manager Mark Andrews told the news provider: "Following gas tariff changes, there are many power stations and industrial operations throughout the country facing similar problems with bulk back-up fuel that is no longer needed."
Mr Andrews asserted that the fuel would become an environmental threat, but the firm can avoid such dangers by recovering the material.
Last week, energy secretary Chris Huhne opened Britain's first carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant.
It is valued at over £20 million and is a partnership between Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), Doosan Power Systems and Vattenfall.
