Homeowners can spend less money and be energy efficient through laying their own insulation, according to an industry expert.

This could complement the installation of a twin wall insulated flue by a professional, in a bid to reduce heat loss.

Tim Doherty, managing director of the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon, said: "Not only can you save money on labour by laying your own insulation, but you can also save money on your fuel bills in the long term."

Mr Doherty also added:"A house that has lower energy bills will be much more appealing, and more valuable, to a prospective buyer."

To offer alternative means of money conservation, frugal living enthusiast Lynnae McCoy wrote an article on Go Banking Rates advising readers to sweep and clean their own chimneys.

She also recommended homeowners to sign up for energy audits and said that they will inform readers on how to improve insulation, allowing homes to be "all sealed up before the cold weather hits".
