Property owners should take advantage of solar energy schemes now in order to save money, one group has recommended.

Since April 2010, there have been almost 90,000 installations of microgeneration technologies, indicating that the feed-in tariffs have encouraged many people to adopt the systems, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Jessica Forster, energy doctor for the organisation, said: "If you're looking at solar PV (photovoltaic) or other microgeneration [options] as an investment, we would advise taking advantage now. The rate of tariff you sign up to now you’re 'locked in' to for up to 25 years."

Ms Forster went on to say that people cannot be certain that the current rate will be present forever.

Last week, the Energy Saving Trust held its Energy Saving Week 2011 project, where the group dispensed advice and ideas about how property owners can cut their energy consumption, live more sustainably and save money.
