Tenants who worry that their boilers and associated flue accessories are unsafe should request to see their landlord's gas safety certificate, one group has recommended.

This is because landlords have a legal responsibility to provide their tenants with documentation that proves their boiler is in good working condition, a spokeswoman from the National Grid has noted.

Sarah Harris, senior communications adviser at the electricity and gas company, said: "The other thing that you can do is go to the shop and buy a carbon monoxide alarm.

"They are very cheap, you can just put them on the side and that will then go off if there is carbon monoxide leaking."

In recent weeks, aspect.co.uk reported that 15 per cent of London's homeowners would contemplate installing an energy efficient boiler.

It was also found that 51 per cent would explore the idea of fitting solar power systems into their properties.
