The demolition of a mill and its flue accessories has begun in the Watt Street area of Sadden.

One part of the original mill chimney will remain, but the majority of the premises is poised for destruction. However, many villagers have opposed the plans, as they see it as an erosion of rural life, reports the Burnley Express.

The work is to be completed as part of a full transformation of the Whalley Road area, leading to the construction of 127 new homes.

Ribble Valley Borough Council approved the schemes, with occupiers at the surrounding Cobden Mill site given notice to quit by Christmas to accommodate the new homes.

In recent weeks, a report by the North-West Evening Mail revealed that plans for a new biomass plant and flue accessories in Barrow could generate 500 jobs for local construction workers.

Centrica is hoping to construct an 80MW biomass power station on the Roosecoote premises.
