The energy industry body SBGI has called on the chancellor George Osborne to reinstate a boiler scrappage scheme to boost the flue accessories industry.

It believes that the scheme could raise revenue for the Treasury and help people to reduce their fuel bills by almost £300 on an annual basis, with benefits including the safeguarding of jobs and a decrease in household bills.

As well as this, the group has said that each boiler with heating controls replaced saves 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide, and highlighted that the scheme is still operating in Scotland.

SBGI chief executive Mike Foster said: "Given the state of our economy, the boiler scrappage scheme is a real no-brainer. It raises money for the Treasury, whilst cutting energy bills paid by hard-pressed homeowners."

Mr Foster continued by saying that greenhouse gas emissions will be cut and jobs will be protected, meaning that a reintroduction of the initiative would be a win-win situation.
