New plans to make energy companies explain their best deals to customers have been welcomed, however, more can be done, according to an expert.

Maria Wardrobe, director of external affairs at National Energy Action, said that things are currently "confusing and complex".

Recently, it was announced that firms such as British Gas, E.ON and npower will contact their customers at least once a year to let them know what their best deal is.

She noted that even if householders are advised on the best tariff, it does not mean they will be in a position to access them.

Ms Wardrobe went on to say that one example of this is that older and more vulnerable people who do not have access to the internet will not be able to move to online direct debit deals.

"We do hope that the proposals will help energy companies identify those who may be eligible for the Broader Group of Warm Home Discount and provide them with the rebate of £130 [for winter 2012/13]."
