If Scotland becomes an independent nation then households could be left with higher energy bills as the country will have to fund subsidies for wind and wave farms.
The Daily Telegraph reported that UK government said it will review current subsidies if Scotland becomes separate from Britain and pressure has been put on First Minister Alex Salmond to explain how these costs would be met.
Earlier this year the minister said that he hopes to hold an independence referendum in 2014, with a YouGov poll in 2011 showing that 57 per cent of people were opposed to the move.
Furthermore, the Association of Energy Producers also has doubts about Scotland operating on its own.
It said that it does not know whether England and Wales would help to meet the cost of such policies, which would leave Scotland to stump up the full cost.
"While over a third of the financial support paid to renewables in the UK goes to projects in Scotland, only a tenth of the households in the UK are located in Scotland. This raises concerns about how the costs of support for renewables in Scotland would be recovered and met if Scotland was no longer part of the UK," the association told the news source.
