A blaze that started from flue accessories in New York has prompted safety guidance from local fire chiefs.

Fire fighters in the Calverton area have told homeowners to have their chimneys inspected regularly, particularly if fireplaces are used frequently. The advice comes after fire officials were called to a chimney blaze in the Twomey Avenue region, according to Riverhead News-Review.

The flames were extinguished quickly but smoke circulated around the building's surrounding areas and fire experts remained at the scene to ensure that there was no significant damage to the home.

Earlier this month, the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) re-issued chimney safety guidance to local residents.

Sharon Jones from HWFRS's community safety department said: "While HWFRS attends around 200 chimney and woodburner fires every year, there has been an unusually high call-out rate this winter and this upward trend is very concerning."
