North Essex Tory MP Bernard Jenkin has declared that he will not back a new nuclear power station in Bradwell until his environmental concerns are addressed.

Mr Jenkin has said that the project will not receive his support until officials explore the potential hazards to marine life in the River Blackwater, reports the Daily Gazette.

Any environmental damage may be caused by emissions from the site's flue accessories.

He told the news provider: "The treatment of the water and where the inflow and outflow of it from the Blackwater Estuary are critical.

"I will not be giving this plan my unqualified support until the environmental concerns are met."

However, Mr Jenkin did highlight the benefits of the site, saying that it will bring a huge number of jobs during its construction phase.

Elsewhere in the industry, the Bath Chronicle has revealed that local communities have been honoured by Bath and North East Somerset Council for their efforts in combating climate change.

Groups from Timsbury, Widcombe and Keynsham are among those that have been recognised.
