Two gas distribution firms have been collectively fined £5.2 million for failing to respond to gas leaks on time during last winter.

National Grid Gas was hit with a £4.3 million fine and Northern Gas was charged £900,000, Both of these fines were issued by Ofgem, which justified the fees by stating that NGG owns four networks, compared with NGN's one.

Rachel Fletcher, of Ofgem, said: "Today’s announcement sends a clear message to energy network companies that they risk a financial penalty from Ofgem if they don’t meet their obligations."

Ms Fletcher urged that both companies need to plan better for bad weather conditions, while ensuring that contingency plans are applied to meet annual targets.

These fines follow a Leicester Mercury report, which revealed that a family in Leicester received a new boiler through Npower's Health Through Warmth scheme.

Once the boiler was fitted, the local council also planned a visit from Leicester City ambassador Alan Birchenall.
