Families in Sheffield have been left fuming after their heating bills went through the roof.

Some have risen by up to 75 per cent, meaning that they are paying around £400 more than what they did last year.

The increases affect those who are warmed by the district heating system, with bills being handed out to households on Thursday morning (April 12th), reports the Sheffield Star.

Sallyanne Lomas, a single working mum, told the newspaper that her bill has gone up by 44 per cent.

"This is extortionate. I can understand the cost of fuel has risen, and if it was a couple of pounds more, even £10 a month, that would be fine. But nearly £30 a month is ridiculous. Like many other people I have had a pay freeze. With other utilities on the rise how do they expect people to make ends meet?" she said.

Many in Sheffield would have been hoping that they are part of the 25 per cent of people who receive an incorrect bill from their energy provider.

A recent report from uSwitch.com showed that this has happened on more than one occasion to 14 per cent of households.
