Tens of thousands of tenants in Sheffield will miss out on boosting their flue accessories with solar panels, after plans to fit the systems were scrapped.
Sheffield Council has decided to axe its Solar City scheme as a result of the government reducing subsidies. Around 1,200 council houses, 135 schools and ten council buildings had been earmarked for panels, although the initiative could have extended to 42,000 council homes, reports The Star.
Councillor Leigh Bramall, Labour cabinet member for the environment, said the decrease in the Feed in Tariff meant that the scheme was no longer viable.
Mr Bramall explained: "This affair makes this government's claim to be the greenest ever an absolute joke."
His comments follow an Oxford Mail report, detailing that Oxford City Council is hoping to spend £665,000 to fit solar panels in the area.
These will be installed on Cardinal House, Headley House, Knights House and other buildings.
