Proposals to install 39 solar panels among flue accessories on the south-facing roof of the Swan Centre for Leisure in Tweedmouth have been consented.

The application was approved by Northumberland County Council planning officers, who decided that the plans would boost energy efficiency at the leisure centre, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions and energy costs, according to the Berwick Advertiser.

Karen Ledger from Northumberland County Council, in the decision notice, said: "In the opinion of the local planning authority the proposal would not have a significant detrimental impact on visual and residential amenity."

When the arrays are fitted, the energy created will be utilised by the leisure centre, while any that goes outstanding will be exported to the grid.

An article for the Sunderland Echo has revealed that a pilot energy efficiency scheme is to be extended.
