Elderly and vulnerable people should take advantage of free gas safety checks ahead of the winter weather, a specialist has insisted.

Every gas appliance in a household should be checked for safety each year, including gas fires, gas heaters and cookers, a representative from Gas Safe Register has highlighted.

Phil Brewster from the organisation said: "The simple danger signs to look out for are yellow and floppy flames instead of nice, crisp blue ones, sooty stains on or around the appliance and excessive condensation in the room – they are all warning signs that your gas appliance is not working correctly."

Mr Brewster went on to say that elderly people tend to have older, less-efficient gas appliances, which should be checked and possibly replaced with newer models.

The Gas Safety Register has pinpointed elderly residents with its latest campaign, encouraging vulnerable Brits to check if they qualify for a free gas safety check.
