A chimney fire in a New York home, which began from flue accessories, has been described as an accident by one fire fighter.

The fire occurred in the region of Elmira, where two homeowners were forced to flee their apartment at 1401 Lake Street. Both the upper apartment and attic were severely damaged by the blaze, according to StarGazette.com.

Chief Patrick Bermingham told the website that the removal of a chimney led to the incident: "When they lit the fire, it took off on them, because the chimney didn't have any place to go, except inside the attic."

Meanwhile, Bnd.com has reported that a chimney malfunction was the suspected source of a recent fire in the American state of Massachusetts.

There were no injuries during the incident, though the two-storey property suffered significant damage from the flames, which initially began to spread from the home's attic before affecting other areas within the house.
