The winter season can mean that many homeowners will be at risk from faulty flue liners for gas fires or even chimney fires, but help is available.

American fire officials at the East Peoria Fire Department (EPFD) have advised homeowners to look out for creosote within their chimneys, which can cause fires without them even realising, according to CentralIllinoisIsProud.com.

Lieutenant Bill Akers from the EPFD told the website: "That creosote that's stuck against the walls can burn and transfer some heat and get your attic going."

This news comes after the North-West Evening Mail reported that Britain's Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) has advised residents to invest in smoke alarms this season, as they will prove to be extremely important in the case of a fire.

Despite house fires happening all the way through the year, fire officials from CFRS have emphasised that the Christmas season can pose several extra dangers to residents.
