Decreasing the amount of VAT paid on home improvements is pretty crucial to the Green Deal's success, one organisation believes.

It is unlikely that consumer take-up will occur to a great extent until a tax reduction on energy efficient improvements is announced, which there is not a lot of hope for, according to a representative from the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).

Andrew Leech, director at the NHIC, said: "The government is very anxious to make the Green Deal work and it is going to be published in October this year, we hope."

Mr Leech noted it is vital that people keep pursuing the objective of gaining a VAT cut.

His remarks come after British Property Federation policy director Ian Fletcher explained that private rented sector landlords must tackle the challenge of retrofitting homes with energy efficient measures.

Mr Fletcher added that the private rented sector has some of the hardest to treat homes in Britain.
