Workers gritting roads within Wiltshire managed to assist fire fighters in tackling flaming flue accessories on Monday (December 20th).

The incident occurred in the East Knoyle area, where fire fighters were struggling to reach a chimney fire in treacherous road conditions until local workers deposited enough grit to clear their route, according to SalisburyJournal.co.uk.

Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service representative Richard Pester told the website: "This was real community spirit, with everyone working together. Our thanks go to the council, the police and the pub for their help."

Meanwhile, Portsmouth.co.uk has reported that Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging homeowners to monitor the condition of their chimneys and heating appliances this season.

The message comes after reports of a heating oil shortage in the Hampshire region, which has caused many property owners to start using open fires as an alternative way of keeping themselves warm in the winter climate.
